British Columbia Road tripping

I was fortunate enough to spend the 2007 summer season in Whistler, Canada. Perfect timing to leave home when you see a snow flake during June in Wanaka, NZ!

I would like to share my experiences I had while road tripping about British Columbia, Canada with you. For those that would like a heads up on some great freeriding spots read on….!

Kamloops

Kamloops is amazing! For anyone that is familiar with Alexandra in New Zealand, it’s just like the same but maybe set in the future a bit more (double lane traffic for a start!). The city is built around the Kamloops River; with a barren landscape similar Alexandra, NZ.

The trails here are never ending. It’s all smooth buff single trails that flow their way through the wide open terrain. There have been many pro riders visit/live in the area so everything is built of high quality. Many big stunts can even be seen from the highway!

Kamloops also has a forest just outside the city with more great riding. The trails here are more suited for 6inch rigs I think. There’s the whole bag of trails here including fast single track, big features, stunts, timber work and big jump trails.

Kalona
This town rocks! I managed to visit during ‘Wake fest’. This is a wakeboarding comp held each summer on the lake there. Great Freeride mountain biking spots are found in a near by forest from the town just 15 minute drive away.

This place has some very impressive riding features that you have to almost see to believe. We came across a 30 ft tall wall ride made out of full lengths of timber in the middle of nowhere?! There are some big stunts around this place and a lot of these stunts feature in the latest Freeride videos.

Golden
A very chilled town about 9hrs drives East of Whistler. It’s a resort town with a lot of bike riding trails surrounding it when the snows not about. We rode a couple of spots here including Mt Seven. At the top of Mt Seven is the beginning of the Psychosis Track that is raced during the Redbull downhill comp held every July. Faster racers are expected to do the course in about 12 minutes! This gives you an understanding on how much vertical there is! This particular trail begins with two entries (easier and harder) the top open section leads into amazing forest. From here on in it’s a mixture of very flowy, buff, fast, tight, rocky single track.

Another spot we checked out in Golden was Radium. This place was covered in timber features. These trails are great for shuttling with short turn around times. The trails were a mixture of down hill styled trails and Freeride trails.

Revelstoke
So much riding here and just not enough time for! The town has got big plans for the future including mountain biking on the newly built ski field ‘Revelstoke Mountain’. The town is in a valley surround by forest smuggled in a web of mountain bike trails. We saw what looked to be the remains of a feature in Kranked 6. The area has cool log rides, timber structures and single track all rolled into one!
